Baby Blankets and Shawls

desertmarigold | Posted in Knitting and Crochet on

I am looking for an outlet to donate knitted baby blankets from crib size down to stroller/car seat size.  I love to knit, especially when traveling but I need to move some of these projects to distribution center.

Also, does anyone have any shawl patterns, intermediate level, that they would be willing to share?

It is a great day in the southwest, still not too hot to knit.

GOOGLE free knitting patterns. you will be amazed at what is out there for free. As for a place to donate, Traverse City MI has a non profit called the Women's Resource Center, I'm sure you community or county must have something similar. They work with at risk women and children and would surely appreciate your handiwork

Thank you for your suggestions, especially the resource center in Traverse City, MI.  I appreciate your response.

Lionbrand.com is the website for Lion Brand Yarn Company - all their wonderful yarns are readily available in places like Walmart and Michaels Craft Store.  There are hundreds of free patterns available on their website and one can receive their monthly newsletter which covers all types of knitting, crochet, as well as charities to donate items to.   The Prayer Shawl ministry info. is also available thru' their newsletter now.

Wonderful, wonderful.  I felt like a little kid in a candy store.  Many thanks.  We live in a very small town in the southwest not far from the Mexican border.  Needless to say, we don't have a yarn shop (Wal-mart only); we have to drive 60-70 miles to find one.

We have some knitters in our church so I am going to see if we could put together a group to provide shawls and blankets for those in need right in our own community.  There were numerous sites from across the country that have similar small groups; some great ideas for us.

I am involved with an agency that is working to prevent and end homelessness.  They can always use baby items.  I also coordinate a project at Christmas for homeless families and less fortunate familes.  These would be wonderful in our cold climate.

Thank you for your information---I have logged your address on this site into my address book.

I discussed the idea of a local project with a woman from our church who was very interested with the idea of the prayer shawl ministry.  Making items for babies would be a natural arm of a group of this type.  So, maybe we can get something going within our small community and put a local "face" on the project.

Thank you once again for contacting me.

The Linus Project will accept all sizes of blankets and quilts.  They distribute them to sick children in hospitals.  Put "Linus Project" into your search bar to find out about them.

You can also create your own chapter of the Linus Project.  No dues, no minutes or any of that other organizational stuff.  Just a group of knitters, crocheters and quilters meeting as often as they like, needeling, hooking and chatting away for a few hours.  Someone usually brings a box of doughnuts and we all bring our own coffee or soft drinks.

The chapter I belong to has a man who weaves squares.  His wife then crochets them together for baby blankets.  She is the "leader" of our group and since she and her husband belong to a local synagogue, that's where we meet once a month.
