Well I realize that people have posted things like this several times but I hope to still get a little help. I have used sewing machines before, but have never had to buy one. My mother use to have a Pfaff, but recently bought something a little newer. I have two questions. One, I am looking for a few recommendations for a in between of beginner and intermediate sewer. I have downloaded the comparison chart, but I need a little more help.
Second question, what are the differences between sewing and serging?
I would really appreciate the feedback.
Thanks
Tammy

Tammy, The major question is what kind of sewing are you planning to do? That will determine the type of machine you need.
A sewing machine does everything most people need or want. A serger does the type of seaming plus finishing that is done on commercial clothing, and automatically cuts the excess. That's nice, but it requires 2 machines, and therefore, that much more space which I don't have. My mid-range Kenmore has a serger stitch, I just have to cut the excess after sewing the seam like I'd do with any seam finish before zigzagging. The advantage, when I use it...stitch and seam-finish at the same time.
My recommendation, if you're new to sewing, start with a simple machine and simple patterns. Then thake it from there.
Welcome to sewing! Dotty
