Bias binding from fleece

AmyC | Posted in General Discussion on

I am making a hat from some scrap fleece.  The pattern calls for cutting out a binding on the bias.  I don’t have anywhere near enough fabric to cut out the binding on the bias, but I can easily do it if I lay the binding on the stretchy length of the fleece.

Will this cause problems?  I thought that the reason for cutting a binding tape on the bias is to get some stretch in woven fabrics — is there a reason I’d need to cut a stretch fabric along the bias?

Thank you!

Amy, I've made a lot of hats from fleece of various weights, and never had to use the bias. For the portion that goes around the ears, the crosswise cut was just fine. As you say, bias is mostly used to provide stretch and "give" to wovens. But since fleece is almost always a knit, there's no need to go bias, unless you want to showcase some printed design on it.

Thank you!  Now I'll be able to finish the hat. :>
