Buying a machine

shwazy | Posted in General Discussion on

My girlfriend wants a sewing machine for her birthday.  I am going to buy her one but nothing fancy.  She said she will get something nice if she really gets into it.  Do you have any recommendations for beginner machines?  I think $150 to $300 dollars would be appropriate but I am open to suggestions.

Thank you

Nick

The very best sewing machine you can buy her is one she picks out. It's sort of like cars or shoes... some fit the way you do things, others don't. If you're really a Jeep person, you're not going to love a Lincoln Towncar. If you need walking shoes, you're not going to appreciate 3" heels. And if the controls on the sewing machine seem utterly backwards to you, you're not going to enjoy sewing.

Want something to wrap up? How about a promissory note and a copy of a sewing magazine. Sewing magazines are a bit thin on the ground at newstands, but you can usually find Threads, Sew News and Sew Beautiful at fabric stores.
