Correct Sleeve Length – by the number…
How can I determine what is to be the correct sleeve length for my custom-made garments for people who have to measure themselves for garments which are ordered long distance by phone, fax, mail, or internet? [People I never see and cannot fit personally.] I have their shoulder to elbow length, their elbow to cuff length, and the bent under arm length. All of these seem to be too short. I am making set-in sleeves which have a puffy top. What do I measure from? and to where? Thanks for your help.
Paula, tell them to place a rule snug up in the armpit with the arm out from the body only enough for someone to insert end of tape measure, then lightly flex the arm as if going to shake hands, measure from the middle of the ruler to the backside point of elbow and on down to wrist above the little finger. This should give the necessary ease for flexing the arm without the sleeve riding up to the forearms when the person reaches out.. Your measurement would be based on the underarm seam = their measurement. Hope this helps. PS it is best to measure for sleeve length with the arm always slightly bent. Bill
