Flight Suit Stockings

blondie2sew | Posted in Photo Gallery on

Here are the flight suit stockings as promised in my Christmas stocking thread…

These are actually made from my husband’s flight suit. He is a Loadmaster on the C17 for the USAF.

I got this vision 2 years ago when we went to the AF Ball and all the commanders took off their Mess Dress Jacket and they had their white shirt modified…it was really cool. (side note I will be doing this to my husbands as well) so when the jacket was on you see white of course it had to be in uniform but when the jacket was off…

The sleeves (not the cuffs) and the whole entire back was in a different material..Some tropical, some very bright all kinds but one had her husband in the flight suit!! It was really neat and got my mind going and I said hey why couldn’t I make my stocking out of the flight suit and thus it was born…My husband and I got on the floor and started ripping into one of his suits!

I need to add this is made totally of his uniform!! These pictures are from the very 1st ones I ever did and of course they only got better so I am hoping I can update my photo with these later.(now I use the scarf they wear for the trim on the cuff etc)

As you will notice I even went as far as to use the label from the suit and attached it inside the stocking. The lining is the T-shirt’s they wear underneath the suit. This stocking so to speak is completely in uniform!!

Wow, What a great idea, and you did a great job. I like the zipper at the top of the stocking and you thought to put the label in one too.  What a great way to commemorate all of his hard work.  You will have these forever and can pass them down. I think a grandchild would get a big kick out of seeing a  Christmas stocking made out of his grandpa's flight suit.

    Hi Connie,

These stockings are truly inevative.  It reminds me of my cousin.  Her and her husband started a store called Wings.  It was next to Fort Rucker in Alabama.  The pilots could find whatever they needed, navigation charts, flight brief cases, not sure what you call them, but it was catered to them.  She also, had some unique gift items.  She had an embroider to embroidery the bags.  If she had thought of your idea, I'm sure she would have sold them, also.  You are very creative.

Thanks I love to see what I can make out of things!!  I am also very leary of mass production it takes the fun and indivdualness out of it!!

I am so sure they would have been the hit of her store!!

I haven't ventured in the other uniforms but I am assuming that could be done as well.

      1. fabricholic | | #10

True.  They are on of a kind and matched to the individual.  You can't mass produce that.

          Hey Marcy,

Not that I haven't thought of it and everyone telling me I should.  I am just one to make something special for others and when they go mass then that is not at all special nor am I having fun with it any more!!

I have found in making my stockings that all my detail work goes in before the actual construction so that also would hinder mass as well especially for my others I do put names on them and that I wouldn't be able to do.

Anyway Now I am rambling.  I am checking in not as often as I am here in NJ having a family vacation seeing some friends.  We plan on going to NY City for 3 different days next week.  We went to Philly today to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall and such.  NY we will see Lady Liberty, the Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center on Wed, and we of course will be going to the Build a Bear workshop and I know that will be the most highlight of the whole trip with the girls. We are also going to Central Park Zoo and hang out at Central park too!!

So thus we are splitting the time to 3 days to make it easier on us and the girls!!

We have other plans too but that is our main focus is NY City!!

Just thought I would share with ya.  If you don't see me posting too often in the next 2 weeks..I will still be checkin in when given the chance

        Hi Connie,

My husband's grandfather was in WWII, and my father was in the Marines during the Vietnam War, although he was in the states and did not have combat duty. We are both very interested in all things pertaining to the U.S. Military. Lots of people enjoy bashing our military these days, but I say God bless those who serve to keep us safe and free. It's a major sacrifice on their part, and I for one am forever grateful to anyone who serves our country.

Drooling just because the stockings are SO cool! What a clever idea. Thanks for sharing it!
