gaping at the back neckline also gaping

dentalpic | Posted in Fitting on

Hi! I am making a dress currently from a New Look pattern which is sleeveless with a round neckline. My practice dress fits everywhere except for I find the bodice too large at the front especially at the neck edge but bust line is fine. Also there is a significant gaping at the neckline edge at the back. Where would it be most beneficial to alter my pattern. The dress front is all one piece as is the back. Would I slash down the bodice front towards the waist and overlap while also at the back would I slash and overlap to get rid of the excess fabric ?????????Any better suggestions?

Before you alter your pattern, did you use stay tape for the neckline and armhole seams?  Since most patterns do not recommend it, I suspect you did not.  It usually corrects this problem, which is often caused by the fabric stretching out of it's original shape.

I like to cut my stay tape (which can be a strip of fusible interfacing, twill tape, the selvedge edge of your fabric or purchased stay tape) just a little shorter than the opening edge.  I ease the fabric to fit the tape either by basting or if I use fusible I ease when I press.  This has solved almost all of my "gaposis" problems.

sounds fine to me . Do you normally have a smaller shoulder to shoulder measurement? My sister in law is like that she has a narrower front and back and we have to take a wedge out of the front and back . Its fne at the bust line as she has a larger bust than you would exepct with such a narrow shoulder measurement. Also check that the armholes arent too big

This might be because of your shoulder shape or angle. Try pinning out the shoulder seam, taking it in half an inch at the neck and tapering to the original seam line at the arm. If it looks better, but not quite right, take it in a little more.

Two things, one it could be postural, but if it is big in front neck and back probably not.  Did you pick this pattern size by bust or high bust?  If you are bigger than a b cup that could help.  Also, some patterns have darts from the neck area that might help you.
