Good places to shop for fabric in London

bettina | Posted in General Discussion on

Does anyone know of good fabric shops (dress fabrics – not decorator fabrics) in London, England?    I’m traveling there in October.   Thanks.

Liberty's and John Lewis are now shadows of their former selves, but Liberty's still sell some very nice prints. Then there is a whole collection of small shops round Berwick Street, in Soho, just south of Oxford Street and quite close to Liberty's. Some of these will only accept cash payment.

Macculloch and Wallis, just off Oxford Street, opposite John Lewis have a good range of basic fabrics, much of it not on show. Markets in Goldhawk Road, Brick Lane and Shepherds' Bush are also recommened by some, but I have not visited them. Brick Lane specialises in selling in large quantities - the longer the yardage the cheaper the price - so is possibly not suitable for travellers.

Joel's in Church Street off the Edgeware Road sells all kinds of designer and luxury fabrics, but is amazingly expensive. There are a couple more designer fabric shops as well.

I think Americans will find fabrics in general more pricey than back home.

    Have fun!

    Ghillie
