Hems turning up

Nellyfant | Posted in Techniques on

I’m sure there’s an answer to this somewhere out there, I just can’t find it! I often have problems with the hems of my clothing turning up after washing. It’s especially bad with denim (home-sewn or store-bought) and sometimes t-shirts (usually home-sewn).

Is there a technique for sewing so that the hems don’t roll up?

Several things can help prevent this:
    *take a wider hem--at least 1 inch
*be careful not to stretch the fabric while stitching--use a stabilizer. I like Pellon 542 Stick-N-Washaway. Put it on the garment to keep it from stretching.
*use an iron in first--I use Heat & Bond Soft Stretch. It holds well, but I usually do a twin needle or decorative stitch first.
