I’m making cravats for a wedding, the type that have a folded, stitched band which will fit around the outside of the shirt collar, and two wider ends. I borrowed a template from a gents’ wear hire shop, but the two ends of this are the same length as each other. It seems to me that, if the ties are to be tied in a Windsor knot, there should be a long and a short end. Can anyone guide me on this?

The cravat isn't tied in a Windsor. If they're long enough you can use a simple four-in-hand. (the simpler of the modern neck tie knots) But usually the cravat is tied in either the ascot knot or bow tie.
For the ascot, tie a loose square knot, right over left then left over right. Arrange the center so it sits nicely, then put the right end over the left end and fasten with a stick pin.
Bow tie: make an overhand, then with the bottom end fold a loop, bring the top end over the loop to make the center, and fold the top end behind the loop like tieing your shoes.
I am so not clear with these instructions am I? There's got to be better ones with photo's on the web.
