Hello! I have a small business making purses out of vintage fabrics. Often the fabrics are quite thick and my sewing machine is struggling. I am wondering if someone can recommend a machine that can handle thick upholstery fabrics, and if there are any ideas about where I might find a reliable used machine (in the Chicago area). Thank you so much!

Hi Kerry,
At one time I was doing a lot of handbags myself and found that my machine couldn't keep up with sewing over the bulky seams or leather straps. I ended up buying a Juki TL98E machine and I absolutely love it. It'll sew over anything and it's a really fast machine, I highly recommend it. I bought it online from allbrands.com but you might want to check ebay for used machines too.
I worked in a dressmaking shop where we used Singer industrial machines. They have an ON switch that turns on the motor and makes them hum! They are really fast which takes just a little practice to get used to. I absolutely loved those machines!
I've worked on Juki industrials, J-6 & J-7 for 15 years. They are reliable and very strong. A well-maintained used model might be enough. They are an investment, new!
