sewing for profit

michellem | Posted in General Discussion on

I would like to start a business in sewing.  I am thinking of making hand bags.  Does anyone have any ideas about marketing?

I am also interested in writing about designers and seamstess’s, their secrets inspirations, how they started out, ect.  Any advice?

    That book has already been written by Karen Maslowski -" Sewing up a storm all the way to the bank". She has interviewed many people who have made some kind of sewing their career. Perhaps it could give you some direction so you don't just repeat what she has done.

    First you need to read Kathleen Fasanella's book "The Entrepreneurs Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing" You can get it at her website;
    http://www.fashion-incubator.com/mt/

    Then, join PACC - The Professional Association of Custom Clothiers, (don't worry this will qualify you) http://www.paccprofessionals.org/html/

    Write a business plan, investigate your market and good luck
