Solution for Pants with Bagged Out Knees

purpleque | Posted in General Discussion on

As you can see, I have many projects in mind and need quite a bit of help.  You all are a great resource.  Sewers do it like no others.

I made several pairs of pants and the knee print remains when I stand.  How can I prevent this from happening?  I’ve made pants in several different fabrics and weights.  Thanks!

Have you ever noticed in older movies how the men would tug up their pants legs when they sat down? This is why! It pulls up the leg so that when you sit, there is a bit of give over the knee and prevents the fabric from being stretched out over the kneecap. Try it, it really does work.

There are two techniques you can try: if you use a double needle and stitch the crease, the stitching tends to somewhat limit the tendency to stretch.

The other idea: Line the knee part of the pants. Stitch a length of non-stretch fabric (usually, lining) into each leg seam of the pants. The piece should be from five inches above the knee and about four or so below. This is a retro-fit that is easily accomplished and you will notice the difference. Don't sew it at the top and bottom but be careful when you put on the pants, make sure the shield is against the front pant leg.
