Sourcing Threads in the UK

edwina | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hi, I am a new member from Leicester in England and until recently I was able to buy Threads from a local newsagent. However it has now disappeared from the shelves and I wish to know whether I can subscribe through an agent in the UK. The magazine is far superior to anything available here and dressmaking does seem to be on the decline at the moment. Dressmaking is my first love but I also do machine knitting and “dabble” in many other crafts.     I wonder if anyone can help me achieve a more professional looking patch pocket on a tailored jacket? I have noticed on bought garments that the pockets are machined on invisibly with no topstitching showing and I cannot work out how this is possible, if indeed it is, on a domestic machine. I look forward to your reply.

hello You can subscribe directly online . I do this from Australia and belive me it is signficantly cheaper. I seem to get my copy about 10 days after it comes out.

Hello, Edwina, I live not far from you in Nottingham and subscribe on-line.

For your pocket construction I would suggest you get a secondhand copy of Patricia Moyes' Just Pockets (I paid ~£3). She explains how to use the 'turn of cloth' method for achieving invisible seams, constructing corners which would also be helpful in sewing the corner areas of collars and zippers on trousers. I wouldn't do without this book. If you can wait a few days  (my external hard disk which has the software for the scanner is caput and sent for replacement) I will scan the most important pages of it for you to amuse yourself. Alternatively, you could see the pages on http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1561581704/qid=1136908473/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-1553821-9624765?n=507846&s=books&v=glance
