velvet dresses & lace collars

Stacy_P | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Hello,

Does anyone know of good sources for lace collars for children’s dresses? The dresses will be size 18 months and 3T. They are hard to come by in our local stores.

Also, it’s my first time working with cotton velvet… found a great buy and it’s really pretty. Any hints on how best to sew it… e.g. needle type, stitch length?

Thank you.

    Dear Stacy -

I would call M&J trimming in New York -212-391-9072, They carry everything.

I would also call Cinderella Trimmings, just around the corner from M&J, 212-840-0644. Cinderella used to have a catalogue as well.( they may still have one for all I know) I haven't bought from them in a few years though. Cinderella is also a good source for bridal trimmings, veils, embroidered appliqes, silk flowers....

I have found the folks at Cinderella a bit pleasanter to deal with. Newark dressmaking supply catalogue also has lace collars for girls but their selection is teeny compared to Cinderella.

*Thank you Sarah. I found the Cinderella trimmings website and they don't have any lace collars at this time. But they do have some really neat trims. I think I'll put the lace collar idea on hold for this Christmas and save it 'til they come back in style and there is more selection. Thanks again.

*I am making velvet stamped embossed scarves for gifts and I wold like to press them without flattening the designs. Is there a trick to this?

*You need a needle board....Something like this..

*Mo, Threads had an article on how to do this technique, by the owner of Hot Potatoes rubber stamps, Mary O'Neil. A nice article, IMHO (since i edited it). Her stamps work really well for this technique, because they have deep, fairly streamlined designs. It's in no. 75, pp. 68-71. If you don't have a needle board, you can steam the velvet by holding the iron just above the surface to avoid flattening the pile or the embossing.

*Also, Stacy, I think Capitol Imports usually has some lace collars. I meant to call them for you to ask, but haven't yet. They sell only wholesale, but they can tell you where you can buy their beautiful laces retail. Their number is 800-521-7647.

*I would also call Cinderella - My guess is that they carry stuff in the store that they won't have in the website.I know when you see the catolog from Cinderella you can envision a store that looks like a Joann's. But these stores look like something left over from the 1940's. They have been there forever and have bits of ancient stock that is too small to put in a catalog. The store is set up with rows of shelves up to the ceiling with large cardboard boxes on the shelves with a sample of what is onside stapled to the outside - that is the extent of the display. I would also call Hyman Hendler -212-840-8393. They make Cinderella look like a fancy store -If any other New York folks read this - does anyone know the name of the trimming store in SoHo across from Boradway Panhandler? - They had rolls of daisy trim from the late 60's (before Isaac Mizrahi started to use it. It is a place that has really ancient stuff and is run by people even more ancient than the stock. They would be sure to have lace collars around.Websites won't do it for these stores - they still keep records by hand.sarah
