I’m making a wedding dress. The skirt is bias and the pattern calls for 60″ wide fabric. The bride picked out 45″ fabric. The clerk at the store suggested putting in a gusset at the bottom. Sounded good. Now when I get to actually cutting it out I wonder how to do it.
Does anyone have any helpful hints? I would appreciate any and all input.
Thanks, Laurel

Laurel, the safest way to make the gusset for the skirt is to recreate the skirt pattern. I hope I can make this easy to understand. You will have to cut off the skirt pattern where it runs out of fabric. Add seam allowance to both pieces. Add grainline to the cut off piece so that it is going in the same direction as the main piece. Cut out the two sections and then sew them together. Now you have the skirt part ready to go. I hope you got extra fabric to allow for this alteration. You can, of course, cut up the pattern anywhere you want, just be sure it all fits on the fabric. You can use this as a design element rather than make it a necessity because of the width of the fabric.
You will want to make a muslin first, too.
marymary I would do it the same way.
Laurel, if you make a muslin, or two, you can see where you want that seam to hit. Maybe there will be lace in that area, or sequins? Even if there's not, now one will ever see the seam. Just convince the bride that that's how it's done using words like,"the standard practice for things like this is..." or something like that. Then she will have continued confidence in you!
Good point, Maripat: "Never
Good point, Maripat: "Never let 'em see you sweat!" (grin)
