Canadian Unicorn

Olivia over the shoulder. Photo by grandma: Wendy S Scagnetti

I made this unicorn costume starting from McCall’s pattern M7852 for my 6 ½ year old grand-daughter, Olivia Tucker. The costume is made of flannelette (from Len’s Mills Store) with purchased flowers (from Michael’s) for the headpiece. I used view A but I added a full flannelette lining to the costume to make Olivia’s costume cozy for our Southern Ontario cold weather.  She decided not to have the elastic put into the ankle and so her version has a straight leg. I used the shape provided by the pattern to cut out the wings but I used a dark purple for the outside layer and a light pink for the inside layer with a thick piece of double–sided fusible webbing between them. I fused these layers together and used a tight zig–zag stitch all the way around to finish the edge. I purchased iron–on decals (Len’s Mills Store) to put on the wings both on the outside and inside. Once the flowers were purchased, I arranged them and tied them together and safety–pinned them to her hood – that way she can remove them when she just wants to lounge around the house after her trick–or–treating.
