Meet Anisa Ali, (@anisajali), from Oakland, California. She is a sewist and knitter with a keen interest in natural dyes.
How did you learn your craft?
I learned to sew by a combination of ways: I took a workshop for sewing machine basics, used very beginning-friendly patterns from Love at First Stitch by Tilly and the Buttons, and also with the help of my mom, who sewed lots of clothes for me and my siblings when we were younger. I knit as well, and mostly learned through YouTube videos!
What is your favorite project you’ve made?
My tan cotton twill Lander Pants by True Bias! I wear them SO much, I loved how they turned out and I love how they fit. I can’t imagine my wardrobe without them.
How do you handle mistakes or setbacks when working on a project?
It can be really frustrating sometimes! I have definitely had to scrap a couple projects altogether. Most of the time I have to walk away for a little bit and come back with a clear head. And I always use the seam ripper when needed.
What are you currently making?
Right now I’m working on a wool Blair Skirt by True Bias. I love the fabric I am using, which I got from a fabric swap through the Bay Area Sewists MeetUp group.
If you could have anything in the world to support your craft, what would it be?
Time off from work to sew and knit!!
