Flying with sewing machine

georgiagg | Posted in General Discussion on

I would like some information about traveling with my sewing machine.  I am thinking about attending a sewing conference in Denver.  Some of the classes say to bring your machine.  How do you take a sewing machine on the plane, I am flying from Houston?  How do you pack a machine for the airlines to handle. Not sure that I want luggage handlers throwing it on the belt to load.  I am also a bit weary about it as my sister took her machine from Michian to Denver and never got it in Denver. I have a rolling cart for sewing machine.  This is a Singer XL 6000.

    HI,
What conference are you going to in Denver? I'm going there next year for a conference (its in Oct I think) and I live in Houston also.

I've flown with my machine - no problem, but take it on board, it went through the security screeners no problem, she sort of looked at it and didn't' know what it was, when I said "a sewing machine" she said ok, and passed it right through. It will have to be lifted up into the overhead compartments, and they can be heavy.pack it well so it doesn't shift around in its case. I bought some plastic wrap at Office Depot to wrap the case and keep it on the machine (I have a Bernina and the case just sits on top of the machine).
Pack all your scissors in your check luggage

Did you put it in a suitcase? My machine does not have a carry case that fits over it.  I have one of those rolling cases the make for sewing machines.  The other problem is the embroidery bed that is separate.  Do have a carring case for it so that it is packed securly.  I am going to the Denver Creative Festival Feb 2-4.  http://www.CreativeFestival.com

I have one of those rolling cases too, but I think I decided it was too big for 'carry on. Will it fit in a carry on suitcase? (I'm not sure which model your machine is) If it will, get some foam (like for pillows) and pad it well. If your too nervous about putting your embroidery attachment in your check luggage, then, you are allowed 2 carry on items, take it on board with you too.
