Another way to find the serial number/and/or model number is to visit sewingpartsonline.com and click Sears/Kenmore; then enter the number you found on the underside of the machine that began with a 1? after then requesting a letter, you can find the letter preceding the numbers you had previously obtained.  I am responding to an earlier thread, but hope this helps.
