Help using my muslin

Hansi | Posted in Fitting on

Hi everyone,

I’m making my first jacket (Vogue 8283) and made a muslin (also a first for me) for it using the instructions in the article in Threads  121.  I’ve only put in one sleeve.  It’s a fitted jacket w/side front and side back and a 2-piece sleeve.

My problem is that the sleeve feels tight but I can’t tell whether it feels tight because of

1.  tightness through the back.

2.  sleeve too tight (it feels weird when I bend my elbow; almost as if it’s twisted but it’s not)

3.  sleeve not fitting right because I don’t have a shoulder pad in place (easy to check I guess)

4.  or if I just need to pull out the sleeve and set it in again to make sure I just didn’t insert it poorly.   (again, easy to check)

I’m also feeling a little insecure because I’m not sure what to do if I change something.  Doesn’t that throw everyother pattern piece off? That sleeve touches at least 4 other pattern pieces.  Help, help, help!

Please let me know if you have any tips or have thought of something I haven’t.   I’m already glad I’m not trying to figure this out on expensive wool fabric!

Thanks,

Jay

A photo of the section that doesn't seem to fit right

I would definitely put a shoulder pad in to see if that helps. Where on the arm is it tight? That will tell if it affects any other pieces.

Where on your arm is it too tight? The bicep? The elbow? Measure your that spot and then measure the width of the sleeve. You need about 1 1/2" to 2" ease, or less, depending on they style. It could be also that the sleeve is okay, but the back is too narrow.
