Help. I am making a circular skirt (poodle skirt) for my daughter and I am using a cottn velvet with a nap. The pattern directions says to lay out the pattern with the center fold on the crosswise grain which means the side seam would have the nap running up or down. And the nap would be running sideways in the front of the skirt. I was just going to lay out the pattern piece with the center front fold with the nap running upwards which sould put the nap running sideays on the side seam Help.

as long as you don't have your 1 side seam on the bias, i'd say do it whichever way you want.
i don't know which way-- nap up or nap down -- tends to leave a worse "patch" on the bottom from sitting, but i assume that's what the pattern directions are trying to avoid.
The original Poodle Skirts were made of felt (no nap) so the circle could be cut whole.
If you want to keep the nap running down the skirt, you would need to cut the circle in segments aligning the center of each piece on the grain.(lots of wasted cloth)
If you just want a white circle skirt, go buy different cloth with no nap and save the velvet for something that will complement the nap.
Or if you really want a velvet skirt, get a different pattern.
