I'd recommend finding a well-known brand with as much metal in the innards as possible. I'd start with Kenmore and Singer and see what they have. Don't go too fancy. All the bells & whistles will take time to learn to use when you could be sewing. If you can find an older used Kenmore that would be my preference. I had to buy a new machine 3 years ago and they just don't make them like they used to. I bought a Babylock with plastic bearing parts inside, with some skepticism. The salesman told me that they never needed oiling because the parts are oil-impregnated, and dang if the manual doesn't suggest oiling after each hour of machine run time! It just doesn't have the solid feel of my old metal machine. Plastic housings are fine, but my engineering experience tells me that plastic parts wear out sooner. I use my machine heavily and will probably buy something more durable in the next few years. Also, I'd definitely recommend you stay away from electronic machines. After you sew for a while, you'll get a feel for what features you like and can upgrade then if you want to.
*Thank you for your advice! I appreciate it!
*I'm happy with my Pfaff-they seem to make a good, reliable machine. If you look at them, be sure to try out all the ones in your price range. There are so many different models -- get the best you can within your budget and needs. The needle in-out feature is good as well as dual-feed. Be sure you have a good dealer since you will end up going back to them for service, parts, lessons, etc. Good luck-let us know what you end up with.
*Hello Linda H,You say you are happy with your Pfaff, which model? I am also looking for a new machine and is in particular looking at the Pfaff 6091, the one recommended by my local dealer to hem jeans fabric pants in particular, any recommendation and suggestions would be appreciated.Chantal Da Rosa
