Princess grainline

dotty | Posted in Fitting on

Can anyone shed some light on a princess seam problem for me? Which way is the grain supposed to go on the side front panels? After numerous changes to my muslin sloper, I discovered  that my side panel wasn’t too different in overall shape from the original butterick sloper. However I had to tilt the pattern so that the grain was way off to get them to match. Thanks anyone.

The vertical grainline should be perpendicular to the waist which should be horizontal. The fabric grain above the bust will be on the bias as the princess seam in this area is a dart equivalent.

I think that there is a fundamnetal problem here what did you do to the sloper pattern?

I think you may be right. I did so much tinkering that I'm now re-sewing yet another fresh muslin. I don't think I have a very good tracing/transfering/marking system going.
