suggestions for lining a pleated skirt

purduemom | Posted in General Discussion on

I know I can count on all of you to help me with my latest project.  I have made skirt #116 from the August Burda WOF using a wool plaid.  I love the way the skirt went together and the fit, but…how shall I line it?  I have never made a skirt with pleats and do not currently have a RTW one in my wardrobe to examine.  It is a 30 minute drive to the nearest fashion shopping mall and I hate to make the trip knowing I have no plans to buy what I am looking for!  It made more sense to me to pick all your brains first! The skirt has 2 inverted front pleats, 2 back.  Would you suggest I pleat the lining in the same way?  Thank you for all your input!

My suggestion is to make a nylon tricot half slip type of lining sewing it into the waistband. Is the skirt constructed yet? Sounds like it might be. If it is not constructed, you could underline it and that would take care of any itch factor. If you are not sure what an underlining is, well it is a lining fabric that is attached to the fashion fabric on all the outer edges and they are then treated as one. I would use and Ambiance type lining. I am sure others will chime in here.

Thanks for your suggestion, Solo.  Making a separate slip attached at the waistband or to the bottom of the facing is what I normally do.  I guess I just need to try it out and be sure the lining has enough circumference without pleats.  Maybe I could split the lining on either side to give walking/sitting ease.  What do you think? I really like the underlining idea -  I have underlined jackets and dress bodices before but never considered doing that with a skirt.  That will definitely go into my helpful hints file!

Since I love kilts and pleated skirts, I've bought many ready to wear ones over the years.   None of them were lined, except for one.  I always just wore a slip under them.  The one that was lined was a midcalf charcoal grey wool skirt that was knife pleated all the way around.  Very expensive skirt, but it lasted for years.  The lining was just a rayon tube with a slit on the side for walking ease.  This kept the pleats from pulling open, so they lay nice and flat.

I just got my first Burda magazine and I know which skirt you are talking about!  I've been eyeing myself.

Berna,  Thanks for your suggestions.  Since it was too late to underline as Solosmocker suggested, I decided to put slits on either side of the lining for walking ease.  I really like this skirt and will be posting pictures on the "what have you been sewing lately thread.
