Tapestry Jacquard

WandaJ | Posted in General Discussion on

I would like to know how to preshrink the subject fabric, or can it be preshrunk without ruining it?  There are two pieces of fabric that I have, which is the Tapestry Jacquard. One is a light to medium weight and the other is a medium to heavy weight. I cannot recall having read anywhere how to handle this fabric prior to construction.

Thanks to all members that respond to this inquiry.

Almost all the vests I make are from upholstery fabric, mainly tapestry.  I have just thrown them in the washer to preshrink them, as I don't make anything that isn't washable.  I also dry them in the dryer, then press them, then cut out the pattern & lining.  They've all turned out fine, so far.  Hope this helps you.

I've used a lot of upholstery fabric, (tapestry included,) for costumes.  Since I wanted them to be washed, I always washed the fabric first to see what happened.  They were cheap pieces and although I occasionally had one bleed and have to throw it away, I was amazed that this seldom happened .

One common occurrence was that the fabrics were much more supple and drapey since the stiff sizing was removed.  In my case, I found that an improvement.
