using tabletop to iron

organdy | Posted in General Discussion on

All,

Is there a safe way to cover my fabulous 36 x 40 cutting table to allow its use for pressing fabric that has been laundered? (The tabletop is attached to Elfa shelving units and it also expands on both 36″ sides, so I think a cover would work if it has ties for attaching to the corner posts, similar to an informal kitchen cushion solution). The tabletop is formica, which is not heat proof. Thanks!

    tabletop ironing surface

    Think about making an "ironing pad" from the silvertone/heat sheild fabric, using it so that it shields the heat from going to your tabletop.  Add  a 5/8 in. layer of cotton knit and then layers of wool scraps or old wool blanket to wick the moisture from the surface and also add padding, then cover with a canvas cover.  since you'll be moving it off and on you'll probably have to secure the layers together with some quilting beneath the canvas.  Check out the archives for cutting table/pressing surfaces as I know there's been a lot of discussion in this forum re: that and an article in "Tips section" of Threads Mag.
