what is a hip formation pattern?

Linda Z | Posted in General Discussion on

I bought a book named  Make Your Own Patterns by  Rene Bergh. She talks about a hip formation pattern but none of the examples are labeled “hip formation” . Has anyone used this book? Do you know what hip formation pattern is?  I know it is a bodice pattern, so naming it “hip formation” is confusing to me.

Linda, I have looked at that book several times, but just never bought it.  I thought it looked interesting.  I did a search on "hip formation pattern" that produced nothing.  I would be interesting in knowing what it means, too.  I have never heard that term.

wha is a hip formation pattern?

Linda, I have Rene Bergh's book, and at a quick glance, I found reference to a hip formation pattern  on page 24.  I'm thinking that this is simply an extension of the bodice (which ends at the waistline) and creates a pattern through the hipline, with no waistline seam.   The instructions are to use the bodice draft to create the hip formation pattern, which would then be used to create the dartless shirt (page 25).  Also, on page 76, basic tops can be created.  I also see that on page 23, reference is made to using the blouse bodice hip foundation ("The Darted Blouse" page 24?) to make a fitted jacket OR the dartless shirt pattern for a dartless jacket.  Have I just added to the confusion??

what is a hip formation pattern?

Thanks Norma. What you said did not confuse me.  I had seen all your information before from the book. I was wondering if someone had found exactly what the author meant. I didn't want to start something, guessing what I was using as a  references and then have it be wrong. I think you are right when you say it is about a bodice  design. It just doesn't give full instructions. I am very intrigues by the process and want to see how it all works. It might be a while as I am up to my eyeballs in projects, but I will try to let you know how it turns out when I do make something from the book.
