Discharge Dyed Linen Jacket
comments (2) July 20th, 2009 in sewing, fabric, reader's closetThis was my first attempt at a Burda World of Fashion pattern. The fabric is a very heavy linen that started out solid navy blue. I discharge dyed it some years ago and have been waiting for just the right design. I am really pleased at how it worked out .
To handle the seams they were first stitched, then one side is cut back, and then the wider seam allowance is serged. After serging the seams are pressed to one side and topstitched from the right side of the fabric. With the psychedelic nature of the dye job, I chose to use a rainbow variegated thread for the serging. You know, Age of Aquarius and all...The sleeves are 3/4 length and have non functional turn backs. I think 3/4 sleeves are just made for petites!
This linen is very heavy. I knew it would not turn a neat corner and chose to change the corners of the collar to a curve. I used the shape of a Gutterman spool of thread to shape the collar corners.
I can't tell you how much I have worn this jacket. It is great to throw on over some black or white jeans and a tank. It has a nice heft to it, feeling a bit heavy but cooly comfortable on a hot day. It has become my grab for fighting the local air conditioning.
