Is it possible to convert a double breasted jacket, which is too tight to button into a single breated jacket without it looking strange?

You can extend the front by however many inches or fractions of inches you want on a jacket front. You will have to alter the facings and linings also, if your pattern has them. There are a couple of good books out there that you can get from your library. The last name of one author is Bensussen. Look her up on Amazon .com. If your library doesn't have it, ask them to interlibrary loan for the book.
The basic idea is simple. Just make up a mock garment using an old sheet, or fabric that is a "throwaway" to work out the bugs. Plunge right in with that fabric and see what "solvers" come up. Consider it play. Of course, I'm saying this as much to me as to you. It's the spirit we all need when we are experimenting. Just try not to think of these experiments as successes or failures. There are more than two categories, especially when we learn things.
