I vaguely remember someone posting the directions for a ruana, but was not interested at the time and now I want one!!! But, I want it out of very sheer fabric so need to make it myself. Does anyone know of a pattern to use? I could probably wing it, but I know I saw this at one time and it was not really a pattern, just directions on how to cut the fabric.

Also, this site has some very interesting information and gives some specific pattern numbers, including McCall's 3448, Simplicity and Butterick. There is some narrative there that appeared to be useful, too.

Thank you for replying. I was unable to navigate the tiny url site due to unfamiliarity, but the other was interesting even though the shawls were not ruanas. I looked this word up in the dictionary and it said this is a shawl worn by the people of Peru and Columbia. What I like about it is: It stays put on my shoulders instead of always slipping off onto the floor! It is made somewhat like a vest without sewing up the side seams, but the one I have is made of a lightwt. knit and is very roomy and I think would be perfect made of a sheer flowery print polyester I have in my stash.

Sorry
I made that TinyURL because the search results URL was soooooo long I thought it might "break" the board. I'm sorry I didn't test it before gong on my merry way to other endeavors. Anyhow, I did another search and created another TinyURL. I will test this one and delete if it doesn't work and just post the real one. That is, if this contrary forum will LET me............... I don't understand why it's not a clickable link, however it's not mine to reason why, it's mine to do or die. Just copy and paste the link below in the address bar on your browser, and if you can't copy and paste, simply type the address in your address bar. I do hope this works for you.
All that said, you could also do your own search. I Googled "how to sew a ruana" and found several sets of instructions and although most were for knit or crochet, there were several fro sewn ones. Good luck.
