Order her Threads, for sure!  Sew News is also very good.  Other poster will also give their favorites, I'm sure.  These 2 are mine for sewing.

I'm with Gloria and Solo - the only sewing magazine I buy and keep is Threads. I count the special Sew Stylish magazines as Threads also, since they're all published under the same family of magazines.

    Threads, all the way.

    I enjoy and highly recommend

Australian Stitches (garment sewing not handcrafts)

    Threads and Sew Stylish

I also have purchased many sewing books, serger/overlocker books and dvds which are of great value. Some have been mentioned throughout previous discussions.

    Happy Sewing!

I'm afraid, very afraid :) we're on Threads' site so I won't ignore them, yes, good magazine, but another favorite is Sew News.

    I keep them both.

Hi nmom:  Threads is the one for me and has been for many, many years.  I also buy Elegance which is not a sewing magazine but it is a wonderful upper end fashion magazine/catalogue.  I am always inspired by the fashions I see, the fabrics used, the way to wear the outfits.  Those are the two keepers I have had for many years.  I from time to time dip into the magazine stand for other magazines, but they aren't keepers in my stash of resources.

Please also encourage her to join this discussion group, as she will not feel isolated if she comes across a challenging bit of work, which we all do.  The experienced and kind folks on this site will pull her along through it.  The inspiration also from hearing what other sewers are doing is constantly encouraging.

I also agree that a sewing book for a future gift (birthday) might also be appreciated.  There are many that are outstanding and frequently referred to in this threads discussion.  When you are ready for that purchase come back and ask again.  I know you will get lots of useful support.

Threads is the best sewing magazine and has been forever it seems.  What type of sewing does she do?  You might want to go to a large bookstore like Barnes and Noble and see a variety if you are looking for something specific for craft, dollmaking, stuffed animals, quilting, or more artsy themes.  Mary

Well, all the girls are right on with Threads magazine. And for a special treat, go to Ebay, and get those old back issues. They are wonderful. Also check with your library, they usually get rid of old magazines after a year. You can give her a whole year at once that way.

I will second Threads, Sew News, and especially Australian Stitches.  Australian Stitches uses real women (i.e., not long-and-lean models) regularly.  The women who does the makeovers each month is phenomenal.  She does them with minimal hair and makeup changes, and concentrates on the color and textures of the fabrics.  I do not wear cosmetics more than once or twice a year and refuse to consider coloring my hair, so I really like what she concentrates on.  If I ever get a chance to go to Australia - contacting her to schedule a review would be part of the trip!
