My costume was inspired by my chorale group’s spring concert season. Our director decided our spring concert would be titled “The Golden Age of Rock and Roll.” He asked that we learn music from the sixties through the eighties and that we dress in costume for our stage appearance from one of those eras.
I knew immediately that I wanted to wear something with a disco flare. It had to be bell-bottoms! I found a Halloween pattern with the flared bottoms, a bustier and shrug with flared sleeves. The bustier was too revealing for me, so I added the sleeves to another more modest blouse pattern and I was ready to cut out my costume.
After using nearly every piece of five yards of jesery and some scrap lace ironed into binding I was ready to serge. Everything went together beautifully with my serger and took very little time. I serged together a double thickness of fabric for the pants bottoms above the knee to make the thin fabric a bit heavier. I also serged a second row of lace and fabric to the flared sleeves when to my dismay I realized the sleeves were too short. Nevermind, my mistake and addition fix made the costume even better!
I love running my serger and I enjoyed every minute serging this costume. For me sewing with my serger is like the difference between driving a sedan and a sports car. Move over sewing machine I’m going to serge!
