Halloween Costume Contest 2014

“…the smallest one was Madeline.”

Madeline costume: hat, coat and ribbon-tie capelet.

For my daughter who adores the Madeline books authored by Ludwig Bemelmans http://www.madeline.com/character.htm, with her help on design and details, I made her a Madeline costume using McCall’s patterns: M6641, MP490 and M6851.

Using pattern M6641: view C, I constructed the collared coat using an off-white fleece for the collar and blue fleece for the remainder of the coat and used yellow lining. I had to forego installing buttonholes due to the thickness of the coat in that area and attached Velcro pieces instead, sewing the buttons on the outside.

For the cape that covers the shoulders of the coat, I used McCall’s pattern MP490, view C, with the same blue fleece. However, I decreased the length, omitted the collar and left it open in front but added a red ribbon closure at the neckline.

Yellow fleece and lining was used to make Madeline’s hat from Mccall’s M6851, view C. It was modified by shortening the crown, widening the brim and omitting the contrast but using black ribbon, tacked around the circumference with a bow made in the back.

I enjoyed being able to design this ensemble. It was especially rewarding to see my daughter so excited to be Madeline!
