Summer Sewing Challenge
July 18th, 2009 in reader's closetIt was Easter at my sister-in-laws and, of course, my 8-year-old son was wearing an outfit I had made for him. Included were a pair of navy blue linen pants chosen from a recent Ottobre Magazine. Next thing I know, my 23-year-old nephew, R, asked if I could make him a pair just like them. How cute is that?
It was about that time that R was in training to participate in Bike & Build, a cross-country bike ride which would take him from Rhode Island to San Francisco to help raise awareness for affordable housing. Along the way, he and 30 other riders would stop and assist in the building of homes for Habitat for Humanity. R needed a pair of pants that both looked good and felt comfortable to wear after a long day of bike riding. He liked the look and comfort of the linen he saw on my son.
We chose Burda 7918 and a natural, olive colored linen from a local fabric store. A few weeks later R had his very own pair of linen trousers: my first official pair of men's pants (no partial-elastic waistband for R!). Twice he stood for fittings over bike shorts when his training took him by my home. A perfect fit!
Both R and the pants are now only states away from completing their cross-country trip! I figure a celebratory pair should be waiting for him at his final destination, don't you?

I'm new to this so I'm not sure about the "Gatherings" site. I'll try and work up some nerve to post. Thanks for the interest!
