My mom used to make beaded buttons years ago (who am I kidding, decades ago) by making a tube (1/4" diameter) out of the garment fabric, winding that into a button shape and beading with seed beads... I still have a few that were made our of a fabulous blue silk shantung - with the beads, these buttons look like they came from the sea...

I had difficulty controlling the bead,--[clumsy]--,so I used a small self-covered button, covered with same fabric.
Thanks!
