I’ve come up with a method that saves me from wrestling big, bulky garments (like long gowns) at my sewing machine. I installed a large hook in the ceiling over my machine, about 1 foot to the left of the needle. I loop a strong cord that’s about 4 feet long over the hook, and tie it at an appropriate height. Then I hang a swivel hanger holding the garment on the cord so I can turn the gament while I sew around the hem. This system keeps the garment weight and bulk suspended and out of the way.
