Smart Sewing Video Series: Fake Fur, with Kenneth D. King

In this 16-part video series, Professor Kenneth D. King leads you through the creation of a luxurious fake fur jacket—perfect to take you through a northern winter in style. New videos will be released every Tuesday and Thursday.

Prep steps:

Kenneth D. King, an adjunct instructor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, teaches you all the techniques you’ll need to work effectively with any sort of synthetic fur. You’ll learn about the types of fur available, from animal-patterned low-pile to colorful, long-haired fantasy versions. Kenneth will help you evaluate patterns so you can choose one that is well-suited to fur construction. Opt for jacket designs with minimal seams and details; these features get lost in the fur. Note that the same pattern can look completely different depending on the fake fur you select.

Working with fake fur doesn’t call for much special equipment. A regular sewing machine can handle even thick fur, as long as you follow Kenneth’s preparation advice.

Find out what tools you need to cut the fur fabric. Then find out how to cold-tape the edges for stability and support. Next, learn to trim pile from seam allowances to reduce bulk before stitching.

Construction methods:

Basic techniques shown include conventional and “hinge” seams, as well as facing and pocket installation. Find out how to lightly pad areas, including pocket flaps and lapels, for a sumptuous look and feel. Low-bulk hems and collars are easy with Professor King’s approach.

Once you’ve crafted the details, learn to assemble the jacket and insert an opulent, long-lasting lining. Each step is explained and fully demonstrated, so you can follow along and complete your project with the guidance of a pro.

Start smaller:

If you’re not ready to take on a whole fake fur jacket project, consider adding fake fur details to outerwear. Watch this video series, then follow Kenneth’s instructions to add a faux fur collar and cuffs.
