Project Runway Season 10: “Candy Couture”

Tim Gunn with guest judge - and materials supplier - Dylan Lauren, outside her NYC candy store, Dylan's Candy Bar.

It’s happened already! The traditional impossible, improbable materials episode found in each season of Project Runway: The theme/title of Episode 2 was “Candy Couture.”

The guest judge for this episode was Dylan Lauren, Ralph Lauren’s daughter, one of New York’s most fashionable women, and owner of Dylan’s Candy Bar, the world’s largest candy store. (Episodes air at 9 p.m. EST Thursdays on Lifetime.)

The designers were challenged to make garments out of candy, wrappers or other items from the store. Don’t you think candy, in all its colors, shapes, textures, etc., is a fun and creative media for design? (Much more satisfactory than a car interior or newspapers!)

The winner

Ven had delicious results with a pastel confection of all things, rock candy!

Rounding out the top three

Gunnar’s design:

 Sonjia’s design:

The loser

Lantie was sent home. Her halter dress design was created from a nominally refashioned Dylan’s Candy Bar umbrella, sparsely embellished with candies.

The rest of the bottom three

Elena’s design:

Buffi’s design:

Everyone else

Alicia’s design:

Andrea’s design:

 Christopher’s design:

Dmitry’s design:

Fabio’s design:

Kooan’s design:

Melissa’s design:

Nathan’s design:

Raul’s design:

Share your thoughts!

I thought Ven was the clear winner, but I would have had difficulty choosing the rest of the top three! Didn’t you think a number of the designers responded with great looks for this challenge?

Do you agree with the judges’ selection of Ven for the winner? What about their decision to send Lantie home?

Ven is amazing! This may be another "Christian Siriano" season with Ven so obviously poised to win. That said, I think all the remaining designers are outstanding this season and am really looking forward to the remaining episodes. Especially if Tim Gunn could be included in deliberations/decisions - hint, hint producers!

I adored Ven's MacIntosh inspired stained glass dress. I would wear that if I could. I think that he should have won last week. Also loved Sonjia's beautiful turquoise dress, but would have put Dimitri in the top three instead of Gunner. I think Dimitri missed out without candy embellishment on the bodice, but the way the candy fringe moved so beautifully on the skirt was fantastic. I think that Ven's dress would look amazing if it were rendered in silk, soutache braid, and transparent sequins.

I agree, Dimitri should have been in the top three. It was hard to believe that fringe was actually candy, it had great movement.
I believe Ven is a talented artist and should have won both challenges. That said, I am tiring of the constant rose theme that runs through each and every creation he puts down the runway, I would like to see something else from him.

Glad Lanti is gone, her lack of effort is overshadowed only by that sense of entitlement she carries on her shoulder.
She was an ungracious loser and I say good riddance to her.

I was thrilled to see Andrea on the show but then I saw her "creations". Her Holly Hobby asthetic is just dowdy and her models all look like raggedy ann dolls when they walk the runway. I don't look for Andrea to be on the show long.

Ias very surprised when Dimitry was not in the top three. I loved his creation and really thought it would beat Ven's hands down since we have seen the rose motif already. I am hoping next week it is not another rose. I really loved his rose motif last week more than this stained glass one. I agreed that Lantie had to go, she just gave up. She really is not cometition material. She should have gone last week and they let last week's loser stay for this week's challenge. I believe the Elena and Buffie will not last long. Andrea and Kooan will not last either. I don't understand how Gunner got into the top three this week since his creation was so bland next to Dimnitry's creation.

I liked the twist of having someone who grew up with a father that is a fashion icon.

They have not done the newspaper challenge in awhile--that is one of my favorite challenges.

Kooan will be there for a while because this is Project Drama, where soap opera personality may trump talent at any moment in time - remember Gretchen. I wish there were fewer celebrity judges and more designers. Get Ralph Rucci, Isabel Toledo, or even lesser known designers who have successful boutiques or sell capsule collections at better stores. Dylan Lauren is a very talented woman but her father's point of view vis a vis fashion is the one I would love to hear. Ven and Dimitri I think will be front runners but beautiful, wearable and flattering does not necessarily constitute a win on this show.

ICK!!!!! To call those wannabes 'designers' is an insult to designers. Their taste is all in their mouths - pun intended.

I think Dmitry was robbed this week and last - maybe not for the win, but a definite top 3 on both. Then again, didn't Mondo go virtually unnoticed the first few weeks as well?

I agree with everyone about Dmitri's creation. Even my six-year-old granddaughter, who was captivated by the use of candy, picked Dmitri's creation as a standout.

In the meantime, I think Gunner's personality is embarrassing and atrocious. The way he picks on Christopher for no apparent reason is despicable. Heidi Klum thinks he's cute. Am I the only one who finds his arrogance and aggressiveness detestable?

Demitry was not in the top three because he used "fabric" for the top with no candy embellishment. The top designers used candy on the whole dress and therein was the problem. The bottom of his dress was top-notch but he took a shortcut on the top and that was his shortcoming.

In re Dimitri using fabric for his bodice:I am trying to remember the winners of this challenge in past seasons. Having looked up the Season 4 Hershey's challenge, I found that most of the designers did not use actual candy for their designs, but the candy wrappers or merchandise with candy logos to construct their garments. The winner was Rami, who (if memory serves) did something that reminded me of the gum wrapper chains we made as kids. Jillian used Twizzlers to make a fitted bodice of a dress that was ornamented with Twizzler fringe (which predictably, lost some bits on the runway. Chris March remarked at the time that using food for clothing is "impractical". I think it's absurd and must make for a mess on the sewing machines.

Is anyone else disturbed by Gunnar's arrogant and aggressive attitude, especially towards Christopher? Plus the peplum on his candy outfit stuck out in such a funny way in front so that you could see the white underneath. Then, in the back, it was flat. I think of a peplum as having some flare all the way around. I was surprised they picked Gunnar over Dmitri. Even my six-year-old granddaughter picked Dmitri's outfit as a standout. But, alas, the judges are often so strange in their preferences.

My husband and I were both amazed Dmitry wasn't in the top three, and Gunnar was. The peplum was awkward, and while the checkerboard look was attractive, Dmitry's fringe work was stunning. The dress moved like fabric.

We too are already weary of Gunnar's paranoid attitude toward Christopher, but we all know this is Project Drama, so I'm afraid we may have to put up with more of that. We were thrilled to see Lantie go. Revamping clothing is not designing, and thank heaven the jury decided enough was enough after only two shows!

We also thought that Dmitriy will be in the better position.
But still, remember previous seasons - Anya couldn't sew, Michael could only drape....but they were soooo praised! Glad Mondo finally made it.

Loved Ven's design. Almost all of the designers did well with this medium. Hot glue guns beware.

Love Runway! Is there a more elegant man alive....than Tim Gunn? He is simply beautiful and the most "Paris" looking American I've seen. I'm American, lived in Paris, saw a lot of males beautifully dressed and sophisticated. Tim gives all of them a run for their money! Cheers for Tim!
